There are 110 federally recognized Indian Tribes in California, most of which participate in the HUD-funded Indian Housing Programs. Many Tribes in the northern, northwestern, and eastern areas of the state are very rural and isolated. In contrast, the Tribes located in the southern areas, though rural, are located near major cities. Over forty of these tribes were terminated in the 1960s and have successfully reversed the termination and regained federal recognition. Many lack an adequate land base to provide housing for their members, so acquiring land is an essential part of their housing programs. The value of land in California is high, and the cost of an average home in California is $250,000.00, so necessarily the development cost of housing in California exceeds the national average cost of housing development.
